EIFF2008: The Appeared
Two siblings embark on a road trip to find out about their dead father but end up falling victim to weird goings on in this latest film in the current trend of Spanish horror.
No cliche is left unturned and some of the twists are obvious well in advance of their ultimate reveals. Nevertheless it's an enjoyable enough film with some satisfying twists and chills, a lovely atmosphere of dread and competent performances.
It's probably a first to see a film that combines supernatural horror with the more terrifying brutality of the former Argentinean government, but it works well and sets up an absolutely killer final image (after we've got a really laboured September 11th point out the way).
Not great, but still a cut above your average American teen horror at the moment.
