EIFF2008: Mechanical Love
This documentary examines how far android technology has come, where it is going and how close to human it currently is. Featured in the documentary are a mechanical replica of a baby seal that is being used by a woman in a home for the elderly and a scientist who has built robotic replicas of himself and his child.
It's a fascinating documentary and it offers not just a look at this remarkable technology but also an insight into what it is to be human. The whole affair is given a wonderfully dream-like quality by the lush photography and light classical music.
It is also, however, a little bit scary - not just in terms of how close to human these things have become but also in the morally questionable decision by one scientist to involve his little girl in his experiments.
