EIFF2008: Three Miles North of Molkom

Undoubtedly one of the more popular documentaries at the festival, and definitely one of the funniest.

The film follows a group of individuals attending a gathering that lies somewhere between religious cult and new-age hippy training camp. All seem to be focused on getting as much as they can from the trip - all except Nick, an Australian rugby coach who realises too late that this appears to be a pile of crap.

Although there are a couple of sections that drag on a little too long, the film makes a good job of immersing us in the camp and showing us all the sights that are on offer - some sensible, some very much inviting ridicule from us cynics. It also offers an interesting cast of characters gradually adapting to life in the commune, none more so than Nick as he begins to make an effort to fit in.

The real highlight of the film however is the humour, which stems from some daft situations but mainly from Nick's reactions as he voices the kind of sentiments that many of us in the audience are probably thinking.

Informative and intriguing, but above all amusing. See it.
