Cork'08 - THE GOOD THE BAD THE WEIRD

After offering up one of the best horror films in recent years with A TALE OF TWO SISTERS and an equally marvellous gangster revenge film in the shape of A BITTERSWEET LIFE, director Ji-woon Kim turns his attention to... a Korean tribute to spaghetti westerns?

It sounds insane and that's as good a way to describe it. Insane it most certainly is, and brilliantly so.

In what amounts to a Korean remake of THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY, a mysterious treasure map is the subject of the chase across the desert (the wild east replacing the wild west) and the three men in pursuit are a vicious bandit, a mysterious gunslinger and an idiot with money on his mind.

There is just enough of a plot to propel the action scenes along but the action is what it's all about. Bullets fly, blood runs and things explode - the action kicks off early on and rarely lets up for the rest of the film. Subtle introspection is nowhere to be seen; vast amounts of fun are all that is offered up here and it delivers in spades.

Undoubtedly one of the maddest films of the year and one of the most enjoyable experiences you're likely to have in the cinema (which is definitely where you should see it).
