JDIFF09: HEART OF FIRE

HEART OF FIRE (or FEUERHERZ) is the story of a little girl adopted as a child soldier into the conflict in Eritrea after her sister comes to take her home from the school where she has been staying.

The film certainly has a heart, that's for sure; everything seems to have been done with the nicest intentions. Unfortunately, apart from a couple of good performances by the kids and some nice locations, there's little to recommend this one.

The story, what little there is, never seems to get going. From the off, a showdown with the girl's estranged father seems a certainty and yet the payoff never really arrives; aside from that, there's little to the film other than the occasional well-staged action sequence joined together by interminable scenes of people travelling across the country.
